HAZARD
Wildfire
Where homes meet wildland, embers — not just flames — drive most losses.
FEMA National Risk Index & Ready.gov (reviewed) · reviewed 2026-07-06
What raises the risk
- Living in or near the wildland-urban interface.
- Long, dry seasons and drought-stressed vegetation.
- Wood roofs, gaps that let embers in, and brush close to the house.
How to prepare
- Create defensible space: clear brush and flammable material 5–30 ft from the home.
- Harden the house: ember-resistant vents, non-combustible roofing, screened gutters.
- Have a go-bag and a family evacuation plan you've actually practiced.
Insurance
Wildfire coverage and availability vary a lot by area. Review your policy's limits and exclusions with a licensed agent — don't assume you're covered.
